What differentiates you from your competitors?
athenahealth has delivered nearly 30 years of leadership in healthcare technology, serving as the largest connected healthcare network that touches 1 in 5 U.S. patients. As the largest technology provider to ambulatory practices of all sizes — from physician-led to growth-oriented to enterprise — athenahealth combines cloud-native technology, deeply embedded services, and innovative solutions that adapt to organizations’ unique needs.
Our key strengths include:
Extensive Network and Scale: We operate the largest connected healthcare network in the industry, enabling seamless data exchange and coordination across the care continuum. This network effect, combined with our robust payer integrations, creates unparalleled interoperability and operational efficiency.
Comprehensive Solution Portfolio: Beyond athenaOne, our portfolio includes specialized solutions like athenaIDX and the epocrates clinical decision support app. Our platform spans end-to-end clinical and financial workflows — from front-office operations and revenue cycle management to enterprise-scale billing and data exchange — allowing organizations to adopt technology aligned with their operational realities.
Partnership Model: Our business model aligns our success with customer outcomes through usage-based pricing. Customer Success Managers meet with customers regularly to share best practices and help them optimize their performance. This partnership approach ensures continuous support and shared accountability for results.
Pioneer in AI and Automation: With more than a decade of strong AI implementation, athenahealth leads in intelligent automation. We pioneered document services and now offer MCP servers, AI agents, and native AI applications that run across our SaaS architecture (both athenaOne and athenaIDX). These AI-driven capabilities automate routine tasks, improve documentation and coding accuracy, support clinical decision-making, and surface insights from real-world data — all designed to reduce administrative burden and improve financial performance without disrupting care delivery.
Coordinated Care Ecosystem: Our suite of solutions enables the entire healthcare ecosystem to coordinate care as it is experienced — distributed among providers. Through platform services and standards, we enable third-party innovation and scalable integrations that extend beyond core applications, allowing health systems, practices, and partners to participate in a broader digital ecosystem without managing complex infrastructure.
Together, this combination of scale, technology, services, and innovation allows athenahealth to:
- Support both independent practices and large, complex healthcare organizations
- Improve interoperability and data liquidity across the healthcare ecosystem
- Reduce operational and administrative complexity
- Adapt continuously to regulatory, reimbursement, and industry changes
- Align incentives through business models that tie success to customer outcomes
As a healthcare technology partner, athenahealth focuses not just on software, but on delivering measurable operational, financial, and clinical improvements at scale.
Do you have a price range for services?
athenahealth primarily uses a usage-based pricing model for athenaOne services. This aligns our success with that of our customers: we are a true partner, not just a software vendor. The actual percentage rate depends on factors such as practice size, specialty, and annual collections volume. Pricing is customized based on each practice’s unique needs.
What are some frequently asked questions?
What support do you offer your customers?
We provide comprehensive support including implementation assistance, training, 24/7 customer service, and Customer Success Managers who meet regularly with practices to review performance data and share best practices to optimize their use of our products.
How do you handle data security?
athenahealth protects patient and customer data through a comprehensive, industry-aligned security and compliance program built specifically for healthcare.

Our approach includes:
- Administrative safeguards, including formal governance, risk management, workforce training, and vendor oversight

What are your customers saying?
“athenahealth is intuitive and it allows me and my staff to remain efficient, dialed in, checklisted. We can see a lot of patients in a short period of time, but yet our patients feel like we’ve spent a lot of time with them. Because of athena, I’ve never had to put a computer between me and a patient. athenaOne, with its clinical inbox and all its configurability, allows us to have work-life balance. And if athena helps me with my administrative burden, it does the same for my staff. athena allows us to remain productive and ready for the next day.”
Chris Pittman, M.D., CEO and Medical Director, Vein 911 (4 providers)
“We chose athenahealth because it checked all of our boxes. We wanted to be able to make data-driven decisions. We also wanted a system that could grow and scale alongside our practice. And we were looking for a system that was really efficient. From the very beginning, athenahealth approached [our relationship] as a partnership and not as a vendor/client relationship. That was really important to me because we needed to
have confidence that they would listen to our needs, that they would be along for the journey and make improvements so that the technology – five, six, ten years later – was still fresh and relevant.”
Jeff Ellison, CEO, Commonwealth Pain and Spine (59 providers), athenaOne customer
“There are a lot of solutions in the market that say they do ambient and scribe. None of them can really be as integrated as athenahealth is able to do. At Privia, we are always looking for technology to make our doctors’ lives easier and take work off their shoulders so they can focus on the patient. Ambient is one of those things that’s really changing the way that they practice and helping them avoid looking at the computer. They can focus on the patient and we get really great documentation.”
Chris Voigt, Chief Technology Officer, Privia Health (4,800+ providers), athenaOne customer using Ambient Notes
“Probably every aspect of our clinical enterprise has improved. We’ve seen the financial gains, we’ve seen the staffing reductions, and overall we’ve also seen just a resurgence of my physicians actually believing in [athenaIDX] and knowing that it can probably take us to where we need to go. For me as a leader, it was me knowing that I had these folks in the trenches with me, not only when things were going good, but when they were really tough. And we’ve been able to not only come out of it and survive, but thrive.”
Kimberly Peters, CEO, Tulane University School of Medicine Medical Group (230+ providers), athenaIDX customer
