How Wide is a Conex Box?

Conex boxes – a.k.a. shipping containers, intermodal containers, or storage containers – are great for storing almost anything. They are used by both residential and commercial customers because they are large in size, made of durable weather-proof steel, can be either rented or purchased and conveniently delivered to you, as well as very cost-effective. How wide is a conex box? How large are they overall? Learn about how wide a conex box is, as well as their common dimensions and weight capacities.

How Wide is a Conex Box?

The first thing to know about conex box sizes is that all have the same width. All conex boxes are a uniform 8-feet wide, no matter how long they are or if they are considered a “high-cube” conex box. However, there are a few different options for length and height.

Conex Box Lengths and Heights

When asking “how wide is a conex box?,” you will also want to learn about length and height. Conex boxes are categorized based on their length. This means that when you contact a supplier, they will ask you which length box you are looking for.

Standard Lengths

There are both standard and non-standard conex box lengths. You will typically find that suppliers carry standard conex box lengths:

Non-standard lengths

Some suppliers also offer non-standard lengths for their conex boxes. Note that not all suppliers will carry non-standard or custom lengths. But if you need special accommodation, you can rest assured that there are definitely suppliers in the industry that carry other lengths.

Here are some of non-standard lengths you can look for:

  • 16-foot
  • 24-foot
  • 45-foot
  • 53-foot

Height

When it comes to height, you have two options: standard height or high-cube. Standard conex boxes are 8.5-feet tall. But you can also opt for a high-cube box, which adds 1 foot of height. All high-cube conex boxes are 9.5-feet tall.

Standard Dimensions

When buying or renting a conex box, it’s important to take note of the overall dimensions – length x width x height. Standard conex boxes including 10-footers, 20-footers, and 40-footers will come in slightly different dimensions.

Keep in mind that dimensions may vary slightly from supplier to supplier. Make sure to ask for exact measurements before purchasing.

As a rule of thumb, know that high-cube conex boxes will add a foot of height to your container. However, the total square footage is the same as the standard container. High-cube conex boxes are great for items that exceed 8 feet in height, but know that you will not gain extra floor space.

Also remember that because conex boxes are made with high-grade steel, the interior dimensions will be slightly smaller than the exterior dimensions. The thick steel will cut a few inches from interior dimensions.

Non-standard Conex Box Dimensions

Also consider overall dimensions for non-standard boxes, including 16-footers, 24-footers, 45-footers, and 53-footers.

Weight Capacity

When considering how wide a conex box is, you will likely also want to learn about its weight. All conex boxes will weigh a different amount when empty as well as allow different weight capacities.

Make sure to note the weight of the empty container as well as the container’s maximum weight capacity and max gross weight.

Total weight (max gross)~25,000 lbs.~60,000 lbs.~60,000 lbs.~68,000 lbs.~69,000 lbs.

The empty weight will be how much the conex box weighs before adding cargo. The capacity weight will be the total weight that can be added to the box. And lastly, the total (max gross) weight will be how much weight the conex box can support in total.

Remember that these are industry estimates. Make sure to ask your supplier about the recommended weight capacity for their particular boxes.
